COMUNITA' VIRTUALI

"DENSE", "IMAGINED" AND "VIRTUAL" COMMUNITIES. AN ANTHROPOLOGICAL POINT OF VIEW
Ugo FABIETTI

This talk will analyze the notion of community in relation to three specific historical and cultural "situations", each of which is characterized by a different form of "sociality/sociability". The following communities will be taken into consideration: "restricted" communities which are mainly founded on the "face to face" principle; "imagined" ones produced by modernity; "virtual" ones which have emerged as a result of "computerization". Through the use of theoretical tools from the field of anthropology, the author tries to distinguish the specific qualities of each of these communities, to bring out points where they come together and to point out the role each has in the process of constituting a collective identity or the identity of individuals insofar as they are part of these different communities.
