COMUNITA' VIRTUALI

ON THE WEB RESEARCH ON THE METRICS OF ITALIAN POETRY IN HIGH SCHOOL TEACHING
Ferdinanda CREMASCOLI

It is very difficult to teach the pleasure of reading in school, perhaps because it comes more from the personal history of every individual than from his or her education. Primo Levi once said: «I read a lot because I belonged to a family in which reading was an innocent, traditional vice, a gratifying habit, mental gymnastics, an obligatory, compulsive way to fill up empty spaces and a sort of fata morgana leading to knowledge».
The fact is that all families do not have this vice. Every teacher of literature knows that to get students to understand the pleasure of reading borders on the impossible. Yet everyday life has something else to show us: as children, and then as teenagers and adults, we love to listen to songs and stories, and we might even follow the careers of rock stars; we like the films we see at the cinema and on TV. Even boys and girls who would never read a book like to do these things.
However, we need to find a language in common with them, just as we need to avoid making students play a passive role in class. Here the use of the multi-media language comes into play. Next to the inevitable time for study (the rules of the literary text, critical models of interpretation), we must also develop time for research which is set up like the work of scholars and can involve interlocutors spread over long distances. The construction of a web site to study a particular subject, e-mail to discuss or exchange research material can be essential elements in the strategy of communicating about the long tradition of literary knowledge.
