INTERNET E LE MUSE

VERSO UNA ENCICLOPEDIA DEGLI STUDI ITALIANI IN RETE

L'enciclopedia degli studi italiani su Internet nasce da unconsorzio di varie universita' e centri di ricerca, sia Europei che NordAmericani, sotto l'egida della INTERNET ENCYCLOPAEDIA FOR ADVANCED STUDIES, di cui Marco Diani e' fondatore e presidente.
Il progetto di enciclopedia degli studi italiani su Internet, prevede tra l'altro lo sviluppo di una versione in rete con interfaccia WWW e di una versione su CD-ROM delle seguenti risorse:
  1. un indice degli italianisti, definiti in senso ampio come tutti gli studiosi della lingua, cultura, società, "topics" e "territori" italiani.
  2. un indice dei centri di studi italiani nel mondo
  3. un corpus di letteratura italiana (perlomeno di tutta la letteratura fino agli inizi del novecento su cui i diritti d'autore sono scaduti) in formato elettronico, a disposizione di tutti. Il formato potrebbe essere ISO-8859-1 (anche chiamato ISO-LATIN-1) che permette la riproduzione di tutti i caratteri italiani e che è divenuto lo standard di Internet.
Si considera anche la possibilità di cornici HTML ad alcune delle opere più importanti. Diversi motori di ricerca permetteranno di attraversare tutto il corpus a velocità elevata alla ricerca di occorrenze di parole chiave.
In un secondo tempo si potrebbe aggiungere un sommario ed una introduzizione alle opere. E' possibile anche organizzare delle pagine introduttive diverse, strutturate secondo tematiche e periodi.
La versione Internet dell'enciclopedia verrà distribuita mediante protocollo multiplo WWW, gopher, ftp sui servers del consorzio di varie universita' e centri di ricerca, e sarà tra breve accessibile accessibile alle seguenti Uniform Resource Locator (URL):
"http://italia.hum.utah.edu/Enciclopedia"
e
"http://www.univ-savoie.fr/Enciclopedia".
La caratteristica più importante di tutto il lavoro di compilazione dell'enciclopedia sarà quella di essere un sistema aperto: Internet permette la comunicazione interattiva e questa interattività si realizza pienamente in accessori WWW come form, scritti CGI, mailto, ecc. ecc. nonché nelle incoming directory di FTP. Ciò permette non solo di avere collaboratori remoti ma anche occasionali o virtuali. Vale a dire che se qualcuno, ad un certo punto della propria carriera di studio o lavoro, si trova a lavorare su qualcosa che fa parte della sfera "enciclopedia" e sente di poter contribuire alla crescita dell'enciclopedia, costui può molto facilmente trasferire sul server il proprio documento. L'enciclopedia nasce con un interfaccia grafico attraente in un mondo dove l'impatto grafico è determinante.

TOWARDS AN ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ITALIAN STUDIES ON LINE

The encyclopedia of Italian studies on Internet was born of a consortium of various universities and research centers, both European and North American, under the aegis of the Internet Encyclopedia for Advanced Studies, of which Marco Diani is the founder and President. The project of an encyclopedia of Italian studies on Internet makes provisions for, among other things, the development of a version on line with WWW and a version on CD-ROM with the following resources:
  1. An index of Italianists, in the broad sense of all scholars of the Italian language and territory, Italian culture, society and topics.
  2. An index of centers of Italian studies throughout the world.
  3. A corpus of Italian literature (at least, of all literature up to the beginning of the twentieth century whose copyrights are expired) in electronic format, available to everyone. The format could be ISO-8859-1 (also known as ISO-LATIN-1), which would allow the reproduction of all Italian typefaces, and which has become standard on the Internet.
One should also consider that the possibility of HTML frames and other more important works. Different drives would make it possible to go through the corpus at high speeds in search of key words. At a later stage, a summary and introduction to the works could be added. It is also possible to organize the introductory pages in different ways, according to theme or period.
The Internet version of the encyclopedia will be distributed through multiple protocol WWW, gopher, and ftp through the servers of the consortium of the various universities and research centers, and will be accessible to the following Uniform Resource Locators (URL) within a short time: "http://italia.hum.utah.edu/Enciclopedia" and "http://www.univ-savoie.fr/Enciclopedia". The most important characteristic of the entire work of compilation of the encyclopedia is that it is an open system. Internet allows interactive communication, and this interactivity is made possible through WWW accessories like form, CGI writings, mailto, etc., as well as the FTP incoming directory. This makes it possible not only to work with collaborators at a distance, but also to work with them on a temporary or virtual basis. That is to say, if, at a certain point in his or her studies or career, someone should find himself or herself working on something pertaining to the sphere "encyclopedia", and feel he or she could contribute to it, he or she could easily transfer his or her document to the server. The encyclopedia has an attractive graphic interface, in a world where the graphic impact is important.
